has its origins in the Schauspielhaus Schaufenster, which was the second venue of the Schauspielhaus Wien in the 2000/2001 season under the artistic direction of Hans Gratzer and Hannes Wurm. It was founded in 2003 as a free theater.
The shop window is a space of the art world defined by a transparent border of a window to what is happening outside. The boundary between the art world and the life world, which is permeable both visually and acoustically, creates a space where art and everyday life influence and condition each other. Life outside the stage flows into the performance, the performance penetrates out into everyday life. “Where there is a window, the world inevitably seeps in and art seeps out.” (Arthur C. Danto). Art in this context is seen as a way to experience and recognize reality, that is, the relationship between the individual’s existence and his or her world.
The staging in the shop window, understood as a joint creative process of the participating actors, enables the recipient to approach it in the event of the performance and to relate it directly to the world outside.
The idea of the showcase is to use spaces temporarily. This is to be understood as an instrument to take space in the political and social discourse regarding the concept of diversity and to make it available to artists as a free space.
