practicing embodied perspectives #2
as part of Independent Space Index Festival 2024

We work with what is there. We explore the relationship between gesture and language and are blurring the boundaries between timelessness and non-linear perception. We somatically examine our entanglement and cope with constant dizziness. We communicate with our surroundings and make the city green again. We pronounce the personal as political and blur the lines between art, activism, and daily life. We dance with ghosts and enter a poetic space. We navigate intergenerational silences and sing, moan and grief. We sleep in an improvised dream and follow the buzzing of the mayfly.

Artists and team members of Im_flieger in the year 2024 got invited to share their artistic practices, performances, and other formats. 21 artists replied with different contributions. This 3-day program is inviting visitors to participate in or witness a variety of body-based practices and workshops, and to experience performances, installations and hybrid formats.

Detailed program:

Fri 31.5. – Sun 2.6.2024

14.00–18.00 // FLY BABY FLY // Sissi Petutschnig (AT) // Sound installation, 2023.
MP3 player, Overear headphones, paper with poem, fan, iPad, felt, fly net. The buzzing of the mayfly becomes an atmospheric metaphor for mental health.

14.00–18.00 // urban jungle // Felix Kaya (AT) // Graffiti, Im_flieger LANDEBAHN, 2024.
Making the city green again – playful depictions of plant elements mixed with mineral‘s dirt and city vibes.

Friday 31.5.

14.00 // MUSCLE MEMORIES // Elizabeth Ward (US/AT) // Workshop, 90’
In this workshop we’ll work with what is there, remembered in the body: fragments of daily actions, fragments of past dances, muscle memories shared and combined into new dances.

15.45 // HAZE // Flóra Boros (HU/AT) (Concept, performance), Dalma Sarnyai (HU/AT) (Live flute) & Patrick Pazdzior (DE/AT) (sound design) // Performance, 30’
HAZE is set in a disoriented state, blurring the boundaries between timelessness and non-linear perception. To cope with constant dizziness and the paradoxical sense of falling upwards, we’ll delve into self-soothing practices through textures, scents, and sounds, inviting the spectators to embrace various sensory experiences. HAZE becomes a performed research journey through a vulnerable state, where the multidimensional body operates very heavy and cool, accompanied by live flute meshed into electronic sounds.

16.30 NATURE IS A BEAST // Auto Affaire – Guus Diepenmaat (NL/BE), Kilian Jörg (AT), Victor Kössl (AT), Sandra Sieczkowski (AT) // Short film, 15’
The essayistic experimental film NATURE IS A BEAST examines the modern relation to the environment with a focus on the car. Shot in the national park Hohe Tauern, the film somatically explores our entanglement with lifeforms that make us desire solutions who are themselves part of the larger ecological problem. This film is motivated by the intuition that the problem of the car is not its exhaust fumes, but that it produces nature as a modern object of veneration. The film tries to approach the contradictions and unacknowledged collaborations of our modern souls in a sometimes hypnotic, sometimes humoristic manner and tries to shake what we cosmologically deem to be self-evident.

17.00 // DAILY HEART WORK // Anne Megier (FR/AT/IT) // Walk, 30-60’
A blindfolded expedition to in-between places and states, a chat with cobblestone, tree and U-Bahn rumble. When was the last time you held hands? In this short 40 minute workshop I will be sharing my practice and we will experiment with tools from Authentic Movement and communication with our surroundings.

Saturday 1.6.

14.00 // CONTAINING MULTITUDES, AT TIMES FRAGMENTED // Bita Bell (IR/US/AT) // text and sound installation, 90’
I share an activist practice in writing, voicing and vocalizing the silent practice of writing towards creating a different experience in reading and listening. This research is moving between intersections in the practices of dance, writing, and sound-making, while in conversation with various queer-feminist and anti-racist theories, poetics, and performances. It is rooted in an auto-historia account that serves to latch onto collective memory and diasporic experiences to pronounce the personal as political and blur the lines between art, activism, and daily life.

15.45 // DANCING WITH MY GHOSTS // Martina De Dominicis (IT/AT) // somatic practice, 30’
In-between
the tragically comforting melancholia
I flow in the nostalgic
interstitial tissues of tactile memories
what we lost
doesn’t belong to the past
in the thought of what could have been
I dance with my ghosts
I touch the ghost me
from latency
to corporeal manifestation

In the frame of my ongoing research for my project “Latent” I share a meditative and somatic practice to get in touch with our latent corporeal agents (or ghosts). No dance background required.

16.30 // <<ARCHEOLOGY OF LOVE>> too good to be true … // Jasmin Hoffer (AT) & Karine Blanche Séror (FR/AT) // Workshop, 90’
You enter a poetic space where you are never alone, you cohabit with entities (micro and macro), memories, traces or materials… A frame, a container to explore the beauty of existing relationships, may they be real, unconscious, past or fictional is offered… No previous experience necessary.

Sunday 2.6.

14.00 // L’ITALIANO VIEN BALLANDO (Italian comes dancing) // Giordana Pascucci (IT/AT) // Workshop, 60’
The dance-language course is based on the same elements as a dance course: development of body awareness and respecting the individual abilities of each person. The choice of movement refers to daily gestures and is supported by verbalization. Through the relationship between gesture and language it is easier to remember the vocabulary.

15.15 // A GOOD MOURNING CIRCLE OF SADNESS // Die Wienerwälder Klageweiber – Anita Gröbl (AT) & Jutta Niederstätter (IT/AT) // Shared practice, 40’
A circle for communal singing, moaning and grieving, followed by a mourning procession in public space, which anyone who wants can join.

16.15 // ANCESTORS ECHOES // Maartje Pasman (NL/AT) & Stefan Voglsinger (NL/AT) // Performance, 20’
In Ancestor’s Echoes’ Maartje delves into her Dutch-Indonesian heritage, intertwining ancestral dances with contemporary exploration. Through these dances, she weaves soundscapes from her roots, navigating the intergenerational silences that shape her identity. The mantra, ‘Kita tari, tari kita’ – ‘we dance, our dance’ – resonates, bridging past and present. Through imagery and movement, echoes of the past reverberate, allowing her spirit to find expression in the here and now. This improvisational performance is a collaboration with the musician Stefan Voglsinger.

17.00 // CONCERT FOR SLEEPY DREAMERS // Tina Bauer (AT) // Concert, 30’
Musician Terz Nervosa takes us for a (metaphorical) walk through the corridors of the mind. Lay down, close your eyes and see where your mind will take you. An improvised concert for sleepy dreamers.
